ARTIFACT: Literature Review
This study explores the relationship between social media usage and the mental well-being of young adults, aiming to leverage this understanding in instructional design. It seeks to answer how social media influences mental health, the underlying mechanisms at play, and potential uses of these mechanisms in instructional design. By synthesizing existing literature and conducting qualitative and quantitative research, this study aims to inform evidence-based interventions and instructional strategies that mitigate negative effects while utilizing positive aspects of social media to enhance educational engagement.
The literature review highlights various perspectives on social media's impact, such as Nodder's examination of consumer manipulation, Griffin & Zinskie's exploration of social media's influence on children's development, and studies on the mental health impacts of social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. These sources underscore the dual role of social media, acting as both a source of psychological distress and a platform for positive social interaction and support.
The proposed research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture a comprehensive picture of the relationship between social media use and mental well-being. Practical considerations, such as addressing response bias, ensuring ethical standards, and obtaining informed consent, are also discussed.
By thoroughly assessing and evaluating the integration of appropriate technologies and instructional materials, this study aims to provide actionable insights for instructional designers, ultimately fostering a balanced and supportive educational environment for young adults navigating the complexities of social media.
